A vehicle is not made from one type of steel. It is made from many. More than half the weight of a normal car is steel, and different parts use completely different grades. Types of Steel Used in Automobile Industry

  • Mild Steel

Mild steel is low carbon steel. It is soft, easy to cut, bend and weld, and it is the cheapest option. In vehicles, MS steel Vadodara is used for brackets, mounting plates, floor reinforcements, seat frames, non-structural covers and many small pressed parts.

  • HR & CR Sheet

Hot rolled (HR) sheet is rolled at high temperature. It is thicker, has a rougher surface and costs less. It is used for chassis members, wheel discs, suspension parts and other places where finish does not matter.

  • Galvanised & Coated Sheets

Bare steel rusts. Body panels are therefore made from zinc coated sheet, usually galvanised or galvannealed. The zinc layer protects the steel even at cut edges and scratches.   • High-strength Alloy Steel (HSLA)

HSLA steel has small additions of elements such as niobium, vanadium or titanium. These make the steel much stronger without adding much weight or cost. It is used for chassis frames, cross members, suspension arms and reinforcements. Because it is stronger, a thinner section can do the same job, so the vehicle becomes lighter.

  • Spring Steel

Leaf springs, coil springs and torsion bars use high carbon or silicon manganese steels such as 55Si7 and SUP 9. These steels return to their original shape after being loaded, again and again, for the life of the vehicle.

  • Free Cutting Steel & Bright Bar

Bolts, pins, studs, shafts, bushes and turned parts are made from bright bar. Common grades are EN1A, EN8 and EN9. Bright bar is drawn or ground to an accurate size with a clean surface. That means less machining, less scrap and faster production on CNC and auto lathes.
